With temperatures in the valley (Phoenix) threatening to reach 115 degrees, it was a welcome relief to head to the high country and the cool(er) pines of Mormon Lake. New shooter OB Morales rode with me for the 2-1/2 hour drive and we were welcomed by big, puffy cumulus clouds and blue skies. The temps were cooler in the morning and warmed to the low 90’s as the day went on, but with lower humidity. The air smelled good!
We got to the site to find that several club members had come up the day before and camped overnight. We immediately got to setting up the sight in range and the match shooting lanes. The troops started to roll in, and with Debbie handling registration and the rest of us getting the targets set out, things started to take shape. We started a bit later than expected due to some “late-comers”, but things went well and we ended up with 19 shooters for the day, and this was with 8 shooters from last month not being able to make it.
Scott Jones, the gentleman who won the Daystate Huntsman Classic from our raffle drawing last month, had his new gun all decked out and sighted in and was ready to give it a try. O.B. Morales was attending his first ever FT shoot and was using his FX Cutlass which he modified himself into a bullpup. He did a marvelous job on this and had a number of club members extremely interested in it. I shot it and can attest that it is an accurate little number!

Vince Pacheco and Fan Boyett traveled once again from California to join us, with Fan shooting one of Vince’s USFT’s. She outshot him for most of the match until Vince “finally” ended up tying with her at the end. As a matter of fact, all the ladies shot extremely well with all of them outshooting me. It was only a little humiliating, but makes me feel good that they are shooting so well. I would have no problem putting our ladies up against any other club in the country, but I will give you fair warning; you may get your butt kicked! These girls are good!

When all was said and done, Scott Rogers walked away with top honors only missing one target for Match Winner. First PCP went to Bobby Corcorran, with wife Sandy and Steve Montgomery tied for 2 nd. Because of an incoming thunderstorm that was moving our way rapidly, we did not have a shoot off. Instead we used the most number of consecutive shots in a row without a miss to determine placement. Steve narrowly took 2 nd with Sandy behind by only 2 points. We had a bunch of shooters tied with 33/40 and the majority of the scores were over 30 for a “not that easy” course of fire.

Our next match will be Saturday, August 15 at this same location. The AZ state FT championships will also be here on the Weekend of September 19 & 20. Primitive camping (no facilities except for a rented porta-potty) is available on site. Mormon Lake Lodge (www.mormonlakelodge.com) is only a short drive down the road for those wanting motel or cabin type accommodations and restaurant. Rates are VERY good! We suggest calling for reservations and mentioning Airgunners of Arizona. They will group us in approximately the same location. I will be staying there and partaking of their steakhouse and saloon! They also have RV hookups and facilities.
Until next month, keep the lead flying downrange and practice, practice, practice. I know I have to find the time to do that if I ever again want to outshoot the girls!
Respectfully submitted,
Mark Kauffman
Secretary, Airgunners of Arizona
