A worthwhile upgrade.
I bought this to go with a new HW30 Urban Pro in .22.

The stock rifle generally produced around 7.5 FPE (foot pounds of energy) at the muzzle with most pellets. The highest stock muzzle FPE was the H&N FTT Green 9.57 grain pellet producing 8.3FPE@624fps at the muzzle. The Crosman premiere 14.3 grain produced 7.4FPE@482fps, H&N Crow Magnum 18.21 grain produced 6.5FPE@401fps and JSB Monster Jumbo 25.39 produced 5.9FPE@324fps. However, the FTT green dropped about 14% fps at 45 feet, whereas the JSB Monster dropped only 2%. In general, lighter pellets had higher muzzle FPE, but shed FPE much faster downrange.

Swapping in the Vortek PG2 spring eliminated twang and smoothed the shot but did not significantly change fps/FPE for any pellets. Adding the Vortek piston seal caused a performance jump. The H&N FTT Green 9.57 grain jumped to 9.6FPE@672fps at the muzzle, a phenomenal increase of 17%. Other pellets showed improvements in the 13% range. I assume the increased performance was due to reduced piston seal friction. The stock Weihrauch seal is rather soft and may adhere more to the bore when under compression. The Vortek seal is much harder. The cocking effort did not increase, which is another indication that the performance improvement was due to the seal and not a heavier spring.

There are numerous assembly videos on youtube, but here are some things I learned. When disassembling be careful with two small items, the safety return spring, and the small metric nut that fits inside the the Rekord trigger block and attaches it to the stock. I lost both…. Grrr. The nut was readily available at Home Depot. AoA kindly sold me a replacement spring for a nominal cost.

Both the stock spring and Vortek spring have a bit of preload so you will need a spring compressor. I used a pair of Bessey pipe clamps on a 4 foot piece of ½” steel pipe. The clamps have feet so you can rest the assembly on the workbench. Works great. Driving out the breech block retaining pins and retaining screw will raise small burrs on the holes inside the highly polished piston bore. This is not a problem during operation because the piston resides further down the bore. However, the sharp edges can cut the piston seal during reassembly. So it’s a very good idea to deburr holes inside of the piston tube. Judicious application of a piece of 400 emery paper was sufficient to remove the sharp edges and allow the piston seal to pass by unharmed. Deburring will create small chips and metal dust, make sure to clean the bore thoroughly before inserting the piston assembly.

Conclusion – The stock HW30 is an excellent rifle. But if you're adventurous, this is a worthwhile upgrade. It eliminated twang and increased power about 15%, much appreciated in the little HW30. All without increasing cocking effort. Plus you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself. It might be worth checking with Vortek, they recently upgraded their kits.
