Starling SOS (Shoot on Sight)

European starlings are one of those pest species, like brown rats and pigeons that are scattered all over the world displacing indigenous species. Starlings are probably one of the worst, in that they are so aggressive, adaptable, and prolific breeders. I’ve seen them in North America, Australia, South America. And Asia; and everywhere they go the local populations of songbirds drop.    This is a species that outside of Europe should be SOS (shot on sight). This is a perfect target for a mid power .177 or a higher powered gun at longer range.

Starlings are a very aggressive species that will take over any new area they move into, and the population can be explosive.

The European starling is a non-indigenous feathered pest in North America that loots the nests of native birds and overrun their territory. In the last hundred years this bird has extended its territory throughout most of the United States. It is believed that the initial population was a small flock of birds on the East coast and populations are now thought to be many millions of birds, and they continue to expand their range at the expense of native species displacing or starving out their rivals.

These birds are intelligent, aggressive, and able to adapt to virtually any new environments from desert to mountains to coastal grasslands. They thrive in proximity to man, and are seen in huge numbers in almost every city in the country, and are pestilential in many agricultural areas. Besides his aggressive nature, the starling is equipped with a sharp beak and strong claws that are a real threat for the other species they displace. Indigenous species in the United States, which suffer at the expansion of the starling, include woodpeckers, bluebirds, great crested flycatchers, purple martins, tree swallows, and others, which are driven from their nests.

As mentioned, the starling has proven a tenacious pest all over the world, and has been responsible for negatively impacting native bird populations not only in the United States, but also Australia, South America, Africa, anywhere he has been able to get a foothold, which is anyplace this bird has been introduced. I was on a safari on the Eastern Cape of South Africa hunting, and mixed in with all the African bird life were European starlings! In our country the starling is a major threat to the smaller bird species (such as the purple martin) and have decimated many local populations.

While the starling is an aggressive creature and a tough fighter, they are an easy bird to kill. Almost any medium to high power airgun will do the trick for general shooting around farms and roosts, and a lower power rifle is often better around industrial areas, houses, etc.  At one time I used .177 which is fine, but a .22 hits with authority and dumps birds where the increased power is not a risk. The main thing you need, as with all hunting applications, is accuracy at whatever ranges you’ll shoot to. You also need a gun that cycles and can be gotten onto target quickly, as these birds don’t sit still very long.

A shot to either the head or the chest area works equally well.  If your gun is not too loud, you can sometimes pick off multiple birds from a flock before they spook and fly off. When using a rifle, I like to shoot from about 30-60 yards, as it softens the sound of the shot and allows me to remain unnoticed in my camouflage or hide for a longer period of time. I like to shoot these birds around local farms, railways, and mowed lawns adjacent to woodlots near my house. One can successfully shoot starlings over bait, using either commercial feed or homemade concoctions. When opportunistic hunting while hiking a potential area yields success, another method we commonly use in my area is to set up bait and hunt from a blind. This takes patience, as the hunter must sit quietly at the bait station waiting for the quarry to join him. When the birds arrive it is necessary to move slowly and deliberately while bringing your rifle to a shooting position and targeting in. These birds are wary and the wrong movement at the wrong time will flush the entire flock. Baiting for pest animals is legal in most regions of the country, and is a productive way to get a large number of birds into range.

The starling are and excellent target species in the off-season months when everything else is either very scarce, or out of season. In the spring season I have had great success finding areas where the birds are nesting in large numbers, and picking them off as they feed and head back to the nesting area. One such area that I hunt is an old factory equipment storage yard, with old outbuildings riddled with vents and holes used for nesting sites, equipment, high power lines, trees. If I keep hidden and have a silenced gun, I can get a full days shooting in. The European starling is a smart and wary varmint that is in constant need of culling.

At any rate, get out there and shoot those starlings whenever and wherever the chance arises, you’ll be doing our native species a good turn and get in some great fast action shooting practice.

Arizona Pest Control: Pigeons, Eurasian Doves and Starlings!

I am writing this pretty well worn down from three days of nonstop pest control with my hunting buddy Scott in Arizona. Scott has several dairy farms lined up, and they want him to do one thing …. remove as many birds as possible.. They number in the thousands, and do huge financial damage to these businesses. It’s not the prettiest environment for hunting, but man is it a blast and you get lots of shooting. At one point I took 56 Eurasian Collard doves in an hour, you do the math, that is pretty much non stop action.

So what makes this better? When I arrived in Phoenix I stopped by AOA to pick up my new Daystate Wolverine type B .22 rifle and a load of pellets! Took a springer along for the run and will report on both of these guns in upcoming blog posts. In addition to the birds, we shot tons of high quality video and I’ll have some  good stuff posting on my YouTube channel in the coming days.

Scott was shooting his FX 500, and this guy is a bird shooting machine. He records his kills and gun details in a log book, and has taken over 6500 birds in the last two years…….. But even with these numbers I think it would take a couple hundred clones to make a major dent in these populations.

Flocks of birds are everywhere, with pigeons, Eurasian doves, mourning doves (which you can’t shoot), starlings, grackles, blackbirds all mixing and sometime absolutely huge flocks arrive.

What I’ll tell you about the Wolverine Type B right now is: very accurate, high power 30+fpe, trigger is a dream, stock is ergonomic, high shot count, one of the more exciting new rifles I’ve shot in a while. I have a Hawke 3-9X 40 scope, and it is a hot varminting set up. Having shot hundreds of birds in a concentrated period of time, I am really getting dialed in with the combo.

As I’ve mentioned, we’ve got some great footage so keep checking for release of the videos. And I’ll post a bit more later in the week. I need to go to sleep now, I fly out tomorrow at 3:00 pm and we’re going out for one last run early tomorrow before I have to run to the airport….. catch you all later in the week!

Thoughts on Predator Hunting

I really enjoy speaking with and writing for other airgunners, they get it and you can dig down deep. But one of the other goals that I take a lot of enjoyment in us bringing new participants into our (very cool) sport. Of the four magazines I write for, two of them are mainstream hunting publications and my material is the only airgunning content they present, which means I’m getting out in front of huge numbers of non airgunners….. as a matter of fact this audience generates a huge portion of the emails I get, and for the most part the guys writing are really interested and want to know more about the guns, pellets, air sources, hunting laws, and what they can do on game. As more hunters are becoming familiar with the use of airguns for small game and varmint hunting, I am frequently asked as a follow up if they can be used for larger predators. The answer is yes, but this answer needs to be qualified. It depends; on the gun, the quarry, and conditions under which they will be used. Many raccoons, fox, bobcats, and coyote have been taken with airguns, effectively and efficiently. Many animals have also been lost when a guns terminal performance is not up to the task, the shot is taken at an inappropriate range, or the proper shot placement is either not selected or not achieved. In this article I’d like to present my world view on predator hunting with airguns, though you’ll find others with different outlooks. The basis of this discussion for me is that I believe no matter what you hunt the gun and the ammunition used must be able to cleanly kill the quarry. This is especially true with predators, as a wounded coyote has more potential to be a problem animal if wounded, and at any rate once shot at he’ll be a lot smarter second time around. So if you are going to use smaller calibers or lower power because the situation mandates it, the hunter has to compensate by being that much more selective about distance and shot placement.

Raccoons and Fox

Smaller predators such as raccoons and foxes can be taken with standard caliber .20 to .25 rifles. While it is possible to kill just about any animal with any gun, when I talk about “appropriate guns” I mean those that will anchor quarry consistently and reliably when the shooter does their part. I believe that there are magnum spring piston airguns appropriate for raccoon sized quarry; for example the .25 caliber Walther

Falcon and Beeman RX-2 have both proven themselves reliable for this application out to 40 yards. These guns generate approximately 30 fpe; delivering power, accuracy, and when matched with a good hunting pellet, excellent terminal performance. Having quite a bit of field time with these guns I can say that when used to shoot a raccoon in the head, he is going down. Lower powered small caliber springers can be used to kill a raccoon with a well-placed head shot, but I’ve seen several animals lost and don‘t recommend them for larger animals. This is where the .25 caliber spring piston rifles have impressed me; in my experience they have been consistent performers. If you start to stretch the range or stray from headshots with the smaller calibers the success rate starts to drop, but the magnum .25s provide a bit more latitude.

With a precharged pneumatic airgun the additional power allows heavier pellets in a smaller caliber to be used than does a spring piston gun, making the .22 a viable option. I have had a lot of success cleanly dispatching medium soize predators with guns like the Evanix AR6, Crosman Discovery, AirArms 400, and Airforce Talon SS, all in .22. These guns will kill a raccoon sized animal with a heart / lung shot at longer distances, but the potential risk of losing them still exists. When using a pcp I will stretch out to 60 yards, but prefer to stick with headshots when possible.

Coyote and Bobcats

When we step up to bobcats and coyotes, more powerful guns in larger calibers are advantageous, and that means regardless of caliber only pcp powered guns are appropriate. There may come a time when the right combination of spring piston gun and new pellet designs may alter this opinion, but that hasn’t happened yet.  There are a couple ways to approach this subject; one school of thought is that a big bore (.308 up) will deliver both the energy and open a large enough wound channel to allow chest shots to be a primary target. I and others have taken coyote out to eighty or ninety yards with guns such as the Quackenbush, Sam Yang and Shinsung large caliber rifles. There is no doubt that these bigger bore guns will punch a hole through a coyote, but with less than perfect shot placement the animal might still escape before giving up the ghost. For this reason I like to keep my range around 40 – 50 yards, where I don’t have to deal with the trajectory and over/under estimation of holdover that can result in a shot being slightly off.

The other school of thought is that as lung shot predators can carry a surprising amount of lead, the airgun toting coyote hunter should stick solely with head shots. Accordingly, subscribers to this approach believe that a large caliber gun is not required, and that a heavy .22 or .25 caliber pellet delivered by a high powered pcp rifle to the noggin will effectively drop a bobcat or a coyote. It is reasoned that a flat shooting, highly accurate .22 will enable the predator hunter to deliver the projectile more precisely and consistently than if having to compensate for the more pronounced trajectory arc and rougher shooting characteristics of the big bores.

So which approach do I subscribe to? Well I think that there is a certain amount of validity to both views, and that either can be ethically applied so long as certain conditions are met. Most airgun hunters I’ve spoken with have had consistently good results with chest shots on coyote using large bores inside of 50 yards, but the success has dropped as the shots have moved further out. Yes, animals are still killed, but with more lost animals occurring. For that reason I think chest shots with big bores are fine when the range is kept around fifty yards. If the range goes out past that mark, I will only take head shots as this tends to result in either a clean hit or a clean miss.

Sticking to head shots with smaller caliber guns also works, with more clean kills and not surprisingly more clean misses, and as a result fewer wounded animals being lost. However, when using a standard caliber there is a need to utilize every foot pound of energy that the gun produces and drop the pellet into a target zone the size of a fifty cent piece. For this reason I believe that the acceptable range of these guns on coyote is no more than forty yards. Closer is better.  It is worth mentioning that the smaller caliber guns, many designed with a shrouded barrel, are a natural choice when hunting in urban areas. The sound signature of a .22 caliber Daystate Huntsman Clasic generating 30 fpe is a fraction of that produced by a Dragonslayer .50 caliber (which in turn is quieter than a rimfire), so this gun is perfect for head shooting fox or coyote in settings where noise is a concern.

 

Techniques

All of the predators discussed can be hunted in much the same way; where legal I think the most effective approach is lamping. This means hunting at night with a light; and makes a lot of sense as this is when most predator species are out hunting themselves. I like to set up in an area the use either a mouth blown call or an electronic call for a couple minutes then sweep the area with a light, and repeat. Here in the Midwest I’ll put about 30-40 minutes into a set before moving on, but when out west only spend 15–20 minutes before moving on. When I see a set of eyes coming in, I hold the light high so the direct beam is not on the animal. Some guys use a red filter, but I have a hard time seeing in these conditions and any advantage related to not spooking the animal is lost on me because I have a harder time seeing them in the first place. It is helpful to have a scope mounted light to switch over to as the animal comes into shooting range, especially if hunting alone.  I have been looking at a new collimated laser locator light that is mind blowingly good at picking up an animal at night, but will write about this in detain in an upcoming article. I think this lighting system with shrouded high powered tackdriving airguns is the future of urban predator control.

Regardless of whether you hunt in the day or at night, calling with a distress call is one of the most effective means of encountering a predator within airgunning range. I use a lot of rabbit distress calls for coyotes, fox and bobcats day or night, but have found that baby squirrel and woodpecker calls work surprisingly well for raccoons in the very early morning and late dusk hours. Some people don’t consider coons a predator, but I’ve just about had them run me over when charging in on baby squirrel distress squeal.

Wrap up

You will hear people argue that big bore guns, and small bores for that matter, can kill a coyote further or with less than perfect shot placement. This is undeniably true; over the years I have seen and heard of many predators taken under a variety of less than perfect conditions. I have also seen too many lost animals due to pushing the envelope and ignoring the requirement fir perfect range selection and shot placement. So my answer to the question we opened with is now qualified; yes, airguns are effective, efficient, and ethical predator getters so long as the right gun, the right shot placement, and the right range are selected. In this respect it is no different than the judgment exercised by a bow hunter or firearm hunter before taking a shot.

Other Stuff

Been a crazy week, the family and I (just my daughter, wife and I, the older kids couldn’t make it home for the holidays) flew down to Chicago to hit some great restaurants,  do the museums (I’m a freak for Fields), and the girls could shop. I had a conference to attend so stayed a few days after they headed home …….. then I came down with flu, then cracked a crown and needed a root canal, then walked into a  firestorm when I got back to the office……. so I’m looking forward to a weekend of shooting, a little squirrel hunting, then next Thursday off to Arizona for a few days of pigeon shooting at a few dairy farms, a rabbit control hunt on a golf course down south of Tucson, and maybe (fingers crossed) an Abert squirrel hunt before jumping on a flight home. Got a new Daystate Wolverine B type on the way, which I’m hoping arrives by FedEx in time for me to turn around a bring it back to Arizona ….. we got our wires crossed…. I have to say that Daystate makes some of my favorite guns, they are the definition of class and take a place of honor in my gun case. Also taking a couple springers out on this run and intend to get some good footage for videos.. So until next week, have fun and get out there and shoot!

Looking Through the Scope…

Hunting in the early morning with low ambient lighting makes the use of a scope a necessity for my eyes. I’ll shoot my iron sights on occasion when there’s plenty of light, but overcast, dawn or dusk, or deep shadows I’ll take a scope every time!

Most airgun hunters use a scope on their hunting rifles, and there are many choices available. In my earlier days I hunted more with open sites, but as my eyes age, I find a scope very valuable in picking up targets in less than optimal light conditions. Rifle scopes come in a wide range of sizes and magnification power. The most commonly used version on hunting airguns is probably the 3-9 x with a one inch tube. There are many different objective lens sizes with 40mm the most common, though many with apertures up to 50 mm are becoming more common, and some are available with an adjustable objective (AO) option. This corrects for parallax at various ranges and as an added benefit can be used for range finding. As mentioned, there are several reasons for using a scope. I have found that my eyes don’t focus on iron sights like they used to, and going to a scope is one way to combat the effect of my deteriorating eyesight. However, the main reason I prefer scopes is because they are easy to use and allow for more precise shot placement. They also gather in light in low light situations, prolonging shooting time. The scope is the easiest sight to use, because all one has to do is get it properly zeroed, then put the crosshairs on the target and squeeze the trigger – no sight alignment is necessary. I hunted without a scope when I was young, and I was an effective small game hunter. Even for small game hunting I’ll glass the trees looking for squirrels or sweeping the desert looking for jackrabbits, scopes have become a natural extension of my hunting gun. These days I hardly ever head out to the field to hunt anything without a scoped rifle. The most popular scopes are variable-power 3x-9x. Actual magnification values vary from scope to scope, but the numbers mean that at the lowest setting (3x), an object viewed will appear to be approximately three times the size it would appear when viewed by the naked eye – and at the top setting, it would appear to be about nine times that size. Adjustment between the low and high settings is infinite – you can turn the adjustment to any position between the low and high, and view the target at varying respective sizes.

For almost all hunting applications, 3x is plenty low and will allow you to pick up your target quickly. And 9x is usually high enough for zooming in on small game at far ranges. In some cases a higher magnification is desirable, but of course that depends on the type of terrain you hunt and how far the longest shot may be. When hunting with airguns we are usually shooting smaller quarry at ranges up to 100 yards and higher magnification can be very useful. However, you need to be aware that the higher you go with magnification, the more your every shake and tremble shows up in the movement of the crosshairs on your target.  For the most part I set my scope at 6x and leave it there, with adjustments the exception not the rule.

If you asked me these days what scopes I us the most these days my answer would probably be Hawke products. There are several reasons for this; a) I like their selection of reticles and find them perfect for field applications, b) the quality of the glass is  very good  with sharp clear images and good low light functionality,   c) they are very reliable an stand up to hard use, and d) I don’t think there is a better price/performance ratio to be found. It’s not that often I find myself gravitating to exclusively to a specific brand in any of my gear, but before I sat down to write the blog this week I looked in my gun room and saw Hawke glass on just about everything own!

I like either a compact fixed power scope, or a sleek 3-9X40 for the more compact rifle. I want quality optics, but what’s the use of putting a monster scope on a compact little hunting carbine?

When choosing a scope, you have to assess your needs and decide whether you want the flexibility of a variable-power scope or the lower price but increased reliability of a fixed-power scope. One problem with variable scopes is that they can sometimes allow point of impact to change according to where the magnification setting is. This is not a problem with better quality variable scopes. The eye relief can also change with the power setting. Eye relief is the optimum distance between your eye and the scope’s eyepiece to get the proper view of your target. With a lower quality variable scopes, that distance can change somewhat depending on where the magnification is set, meaning that the position of the cheek on the stock will have to change as well.  A fixed-power scope solves both of these problems by maintaining a constant setting, and therefore constant eye relief. Because the power doesn’t change, point of impact won’t, either. However, the first time you need to pick out a headshot on a squirrel sitting up in a tree and only a fixed low power magnification, the utility of a variable scope becomes obvious. Having said this, I am starting to use lower powered (4X or 6X) fixed magnification scopes more, especially on compact guns where I don’t want the added weight of the variable scopes which tend to be larger as a rule.

I also think that the light transmitting characteristics of the scope is one of the most critical aspects in delivering a quality scope, because it’s in the low light conditions that a scope is most useful for hunters. The majority of scopes provide fairly sharp images when it’s bright and clear outside, it’s those dull and dreary early morning or dusk hours that puts then to the test. I believe the tube dimension has some impact on the light transmission, it is secondary to the exit pupil which in turn is a function of the magnification and the size of the objective. The larger objective provides a larger exit pupil and better at imaging in low light conditions. You also want a scope with multi-coated glass, which reduces the reflection of light off the scopes lenses, effectively letting in more light.

An often discussed feature of a scope is the size of the objective (front) lens. Simply put, larger objectives gather more light, making a brighter view, especially in low-light conditions (with appropriate coating on lenses, as discussed). At dusk or daybreak, a good scope will gather enough light to allow me to peer into dark brushy areas and see much more detail than can be seen with the naked eye. However, larger objectives invariably mean that the scope must be mounted higher on the gun – and the higher the line of sight, the more awkward the sighting process becomes, and the more awkward the gun is to handle, as it becomes increasingly top-heavy. The hunter has to consider the conditions under which they will shoot and how the gun will be used.

I do believe that you should get the best scope you can afford; I often spend almost as much on my scope as I do on my air rifle. You can buy a premium priced rifle and use top quality pellets to achieve peak accuracy, but with a poor quality scope you’ll never reach the rifle/pellet combinations full potential. I want a good scope on any gun that I hunt with, and I’m willing to pay the price to get it. I’ve learned the hard way that cheap scopes are worth even less than their purchase price. Especially when the scope is going to live on top of a magnum air rifle, cheap scopes will not survive very long. Nothing is as frustrating as being out on a hunt and having your equipment fail, and this will happen with a cheap scope at some point. The reticle will shift, the lens will fog, and I learned from experience that something is bound to go wrong. But a value priced scope is not the same as cheap, look around at Hawke and Bushnell scopes and you can find very good glass at a reasonable price. Do your homework and look at companies that are built on budget pricing, and you can find some surprisingly good scopes there as well, but still the mantra of ”buy the best scope you can afford” is valid.

What I’ve got going on

I’m going out to Arizona in a couple weeks to do another dairy farm pigeon/Eurasian dove shoot for a couple days, then dropping down to Tucson to shoot rabbits at an overrun golf course. Next is a multiday hunt for whitetail in Alabama’s first season in which Airguns are allowed, then off for a hog hunt, a few Midwestern squirrel hunts, Then off for Texas predators and a blackbuck, leading up to Shot show, more Midwestern small game and some winter crow shooting, with a lead up to my Javalina hunt in Arizona (their first legal season for Airguns). Lots going on and lots to be excited about.

.25 Caliber- What do I really think?

I have several guns in .25 caliber, with both PCP and springers represented. I’ve used these guns to take squirrels, rabbits, prairie dogs, groundhogs, pigeons, crows, turkey, Guinea fowl, quail, pheasant, springhare, mongoose, hyrax, raccoons, ringtail cats, bobcat, fox, coyote…… by this time it’s safe to say I’ve shot a lot of game with guns in this caliber, and I feel comfortable making some strong statements about the .25, which might also be controversial. The first of these is that up until recently I’ve come to consider it the best all-around caliber. The reason I say “up until recently” will be explained later. Up until recently, the .25 has been the largest of the standard production calibers and has been around since the early 1900s. However, most of the earlier guns chambered for this caliber were under powered and their performance limited the .25s utility to close range plinking, and if that’s the application why bother with a larger caliber? A .177 works just fine.

While this caliber is gaining popularity in the high powered precharged pneumatic airgun world, there are still fewer springers up to the task, though this has been changing as well. For a springer to effectively propel a 24 grain pellet at high enough velocities to be useful for hunting, the gun requires a large compression tube and a very strong spring. Examples of spring piston guns being produced in .25 are the Webly Patriot, the Beeman RX2, the Hatsan 125 Sniper, the Weihrauch HW90, and the Benjamin NP Trail, which are all fairly hefty guns.

So why did I say I believe this is the best all-around caliber? Because it hits with authority and creates an excellent wound channel making it a very effective caliber for taking almost all airgun appropriate game. And that broad statement is the crux of the matter, a .25 is not too much for a squirrel or a rabbit, killing quickly without ripping your quarry up. On the other hand it is perfect for bigger stuff like turkey or raccoon, and if a coyote comes up, while not the perfect option, it is still a valid one for these larger animals.

So why did I say my opinion might be shifting? Because I think that a compelling argument can be made for the new .303 airgun caliber, and for all the same reasons I like the .25. I made a strong statement a few months back that the .303 is the new .25, and believe there is some merit to this view. It is getting to the boundary of being a viable small game option, however it is usable and does perform even better than the .25 on bigger game. However, it is only available in limited guns and there is only one manufacturer of pellets though I think both of these situations will change in future.

There is no doubt that these springers are all a handful and takes some muscle to cock (40-50 lb cocking effort is typical), but the end result is a fully self contained powerplant that can generate close to 20-30 fpe! To put this in context, most magnum springers in .177 or .22 are doing very well if they put out 18 fpe. If a springer can propel a 24 grain Field Trophy pellet at approximately 750 fps, it is getting close to the velocity one expects out of the typical .22 caliber magnum springer. Therefore the trajectory obtained is pretty close to that of a standard .22, but my-oh-my, what a difference in terminal performance! A jackrabbit hit at fifty yards will be knocked clean of its feet. A .25 pellet moving at this velocity is more than adequate for raccoon sized game out to forty yards, which I would not recommend a .22 (and definitely not a .177) be used for. As a matter of fact this is the springer/pellet combo I’ll opt for when shooting raccoons or woodchucks. Because the larger .25 pellets have a better ballistic coefficient they will retain more energy at greater distances resulting in superior knockdown power, and if the hunter needs to reach out a bit further they can still get a clean kill. While there is no doubt that a perfectly placed pellet, even a .177, can kill a medium sized animal the .25 is much more forgiving and allows some latitude in shot placement. Besides hitting harder, the .25 obviously opens a larger wound channel than the small calibers.

Where the caliber really comes into its own is when shot from a PCP gun, and this has become an almost ubiquitous offering, with manufacturers such as Daystate, FX, Crosman, AirForce, Sam Yang, BSA, and several others offer most of their poplar models in this caliber. Larger calibers are more efficient in PCP guns, and the .25 caliber in a high power PCP can easily generate energy over 50 fpe using standard Diabolo pellets. The guns in my collection in .25 include an FX Verminator Extreme, Benjamin Marauder, Airforce Talon-P and Condor,  an Evenix Windy City, Rainstorm, and Max, and a couple of custom rifles including a Quckenbush. All of these guns provide good accuracy, and really excellent in some of them.

It used to be that finding a supply of .25 pellets was difficult, and the selection limited. But these days there are a number of .25 caliber pellets available from the online airgun stores, though you’re not likely to find them at your local gun shop.  Pellets manufactured by JSB, H&N, Beeman, Eu Jin, Crosman and Webley can be found in a variety of styles; round nose, hollow point, wadcutters, and field points.  The lighter of these pellets, such as the Beeman Laser, weigh in at about 17 grains, and heavier ones such as the Eu Jins go up to almost 35 grains. While I will usually shoot heavier pellets out of my .25 PCPs, when using a spring piston gun I’ll opt for a lighter pellet. The reason for this is that the PCP working off of a high pressure charge can get a couple hundred feet per second higher velocity with a given pellet than can be achieved with the springer.

In summary, if you need to get a hard hitting airgun for hunting larger quarry the .25 is a good option, so long as you use a gun engineered to handle it. Remember that unlike firearms, with airguns it is the gun and not the ammunition that provides the power. On the upside, when coupled with the right gun the .25 pellet will provide more power, it will retain velocity better, and it will open a larger wound channel. On the downside; the spring piston guns are heavier, harder to cock, have a bit more recoil, availability is more limited and there are not as many models of gun to choose from. However, with the advent of the online airgun shop availability of guns and pellets is not really an issue. Now don’t misunderstand what I am saying here, the .177 is a respectable performer on small game, and the .22 is also a great all around caliber. But when all is said and done, if I’m going to acquire a new gun these days, it’s going to be a .25 caliber if the gun I want is the appropriate platform for it. If you’re looking for a new gun you might want to consider a quarter bore!

Hunting Airgun: Power Requirements

One of the most common questions asked by hunters when they start to use airguns is “how much power do I need to kill a rabbit, a coyote, a deer? Conscientious hunters want to make sure they are using enough gun to cleanly drop their prey. Hunters should try for the quickest, cleanest, and most effective kill. When the trigger is squeezed it should be for the highest percentage shot, be that a head or a chest shot. I’ve heard some say “you should always use a head shot when squirrel or rabbit hunting”, but I believe it’s situational. When I hunt squirrels in spring my preference is head shots, because the dense foliage on the trees allows me to get closer and in these conditions a chest shot might leave them with enough gas in the tank to get lost in the leaves and branches. But I’ll take the chest shot on the same quarry in the same woods in winter, when there is less cover on the trees and less chance of losing an animal even if it runs a few yards.

Power delivered on target is not the limiting factor in most cases, rather it’s the ability to put the target right on target.

I’ve heard some maintain a headshot is more humane, and while I would never inflict unnecessary pain on an animal, the fact that it runs a few yards after a chest shot doesn’t mean its feeling more or less pain. Remember that the typical death of a squirrel or rabbit in the wild is generally a lot less pleasant than getting shot, head or chest. The pertinent question one should ask; is there a valid reason for shooting the animal? These reasons can be for food, to control populations, to eradicate populations, and I’ll go out on a limb and say trophy hunting. The hunters motivation to hunt is an individual issue, the regulations are based on if it make sense from a wildlife management perspective.

Circling back to the question of power; the statement that a hunter wants to make the quickest, cleanest, and most effective kill means that they need a gun generating enough power and poking a big enough hole to meet these objectives. In North America we’re a firearm culture and we’ve been raised to believe more power is better. Because of the prevalence of firearms, airguns and their capabilities have been overshadowed, so their validity as hunting weapons has been suspect. The truth of the matter is that airguns can put out a lot more power than has been generally attributed to them,  and that at the same time it takes a lot less power to cleanly take game than many people realize. In this article I’ll take a look at some of the rules of thumb I use in my airgun hunting to ensure that I am using a gun appropriate to the game and situations I expect to encounter.

What Energy Levels do Airguns Produce?

Most of the conventional .177, .20, and .22 spring piston rifles on the market today will generate between 10 -20 fpe of energy, with outliers in either direction. A few, especially the big .25 magnums can go considerably higher tracking up into the 30 fpe range. That is enough power to take anything up to a raccoon size animal if the correct shot placement, pellet selection, and range is adhered to. But as a rule, springers can be difficult to master and shoot accurately. Both the .22 caliber 16 fpe and .25 caliber 30 fpe guns will anchor a raccoon at 30 yards with a perfect headshot, but it can be harder to get the shot placement with the more powerful gun. We’ll come back to the accuracy vs. power discussion a bit further on.

When you get into precharged pneumatic rifles the range of energy levels produced really opens up, my guns go from a UK spec’d 12 fpe Webley Raider to a 550 fpe .457 Quackenbush. As a rule, most guns in the .177 and .22 calibers are in the 16 – 35 fpe range, the .25 in the 35 – 60 fpe range, the mid bores (.303 – .357) from the 75 fpe to 200 fpe, and the big bores (.40 – .50) anywhere from 200 fpe to 600 fpe. Again there are outliers in all of these, especially when we start look at tuned, modified, and custom guns, but the above gives a reasonable overview.

So there is a wide range of velocities and energy levels that today’s airguns can produce. But this is just one variable in what guns are best for a specific hunting scenario. To keep this discussion manageable, I’m going to limit it to small game and predator hunting, as big game is more of a niche segment of airgun hunting.

Hunting airguns benchmarked against the .22 rimfire

Probably like most guys of my age that grew up in the USA, the .22 rimfire was the basis of my development as a hunter. As a kid I carried a number of rimfire rifles through the mountains, desert and coastal hills of (a very different) Southern California. My California was one of orange groves and bean fields, rolling hills, and undeveloped tracts of land where a kid could walk along with his rifle over his shoulder, waving to cars as they drove by without rousing the local SWAT team. I took countless ground squirrels, rabbits, crows, quail, raccoons, and the occasional coyote with these guns. I dropped a lot of game and I lost some, and really came to understand that a well-placed shot was the key factor to success.

A .22 rimfire typically pushes a 40 grain bullet at 1050 fps, generating 100 fpe. So if we look at the energy delivered by a 16 grain .22 pellet moving at 900 fps and generating 28 fpe, and consider the fact that the .22 rimfire didn’t always do the job, we might be forgiven for discounting the air rifle out of hand. However either of these projectiles would anchor a big jackrabbit on the spot at 50 yards with a well-placed brain or a heart shot. In my experience the average air rifle is more accurate than the average rimfire, so I’m more consistently able to make a “perfect” shot with one of my air rifles. On the other hand, the rimfires heavier bullet and much higher velocity (especially at 50 yards) means that even a less than perfect hit will probably kill the rabbit.

The crux of the matter is just this, while energy dumped on target is important, it is the ability to place the shot on target with precision that is critical. What I mean is that a gun delivering a pellet to a jackrabbit’s heart at 10 fpe is not going to make it any more dead than hitting it with 25 fpe. So my maxim is that” its accuracy first power second”. This of course is making the assumption that a minimum power level is achieved.

The British experience has proven this to be the case, in a country where by far and away most of the guns are under the legal limit of 12 fpe (without a firearms certificate),  our cousins across the pond have been very successful in hunting rabbits, squirrels, crows, and  pigeons in huge numbers.

I believe that all things considered, more power is better, it allows you to reach out further, gives more latitude in shot selection, and lets you hunt the larger bodied animals we have in North America. There are times however, when hunting around farms, buildings, livestock etc. that a lower powered gun might be preferable. I was out doing a pest control pigeon shoot inside and around a barn, and opted for a low power setting on my pcp of 10 fpe (you have to love the adjustable powered guns). These pest birds went down cleanly, there was no over penetration on hits, and the couple of misses that hit the tin roof didn’t cause any damage.

The influence of range as it affects the power required to kill quarry is usually less of an issue than the shooters ability to place the shot accurately at longer distances. Because of the lower velocities obtained with most airguns, which also shed velocity rapidly due to the relatively poor ballistic coefficient of most pellets, makes dealing with trajectory more of an issue than experienced with a rimfire. This is not to say you can’t reach out with an airgun, I’ve routinely taken prairie dog at about 100 yards with higher powered .22 and .25 caliber guns. However you’re ability to place the pellet exactly where you want it will limit your range before the drop in killing power does.

Extreme Bench Rest Follow Up!

I’d flown in for the EBR arriving in Phoenix late Thursday night, picked up my rifle at the baggage claim, jumped into a rental car, and headed off for Tucson. After a stop along the way, I checked out of my hotel and was on my way to Quail Creek with one of the best Airgun ranges I’ve ever seen.

Arriving at the range there was a lot of activity with the AoA contingency getting things set up.  AoA had supplied a filling station with a number of carbon fiber tanks on these really cool little wheeled caddies, and had one of their compressors on site to keep the air flowing!  Quail Creek Airgun club has 20 lanes each with a standardized shooting bench under (most stations) and awning. Each of the lanes is 75 yards, with tiles set at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 yards on which steel silhouettes can be placed for those reactive events, with portable stands that are positioned at 25 meters and 75 yards for target events, with targets and mounting supplies provided by the sponsors.

Several gun company representatives came and represented!! I love the fact that you get President/ CEO’s of companies that not only come, mix and talk with customers, but also compete. Tony Belas from Daystate (along with the beautiful new Wolverine B Type 35 fpe bottle forward design (more about that to come) and Fredrick Axelson from FX with his Bobcat bullpup, and Brad Bonar, the national sales manager for Hawke. Ross … from Milbro along with the shroud king himself, Andrew Hugget, pitched up. So much airgunning expertise in one place is very unusual in the States and these guys were very accessible and genuinely happy to get feedback directly from customers.

Besides the substantial cost shouldered by all of the sponsors, I don’t know if most of us realize how much work actually goes into this event. AoA had all of their employees working for days to prepare for the two day EBR. And the effort put in by the members of the Quail Creek Airgun Club was really quite impressive; as range masters, timers, score keepers (not to mention building the range), directing traffic, manning the BBQ and coffee wagon, they are a truly first class group of people. As a matter of fact the residents of the community embrace the event, and everywhere we went the locals were welcoming, friendly, and helpful (I got lost …. a lot).

There were three events, 25M benchrest, Combat Silhouette, and Extreme (75 yd) benchrest, and lots of great shooters. You can check the results on the AoA site,  there will be plenty of information flowing on the events, and you can also see a video I generated speaking with some of the visitors, at the address below. I didn’t shoot competitively but shoot my event (combat silhouette) and had a blast! I will tell you, this was a great event and if you couldn’t make it this year… you’ll have to plan for next… well worth the trip. Especially for me, I got to meet a lot of the guys I’ve been communicating with on the blog, my website, and the forums.

FAQ: A Springer Or PCP For Hunting?

A much younger me in the California deserts with my Beeman C1. I have shot hundreds of jackrabbits with this gun, low power but light, compact, the most ergonomic stock I’ve used (as a matter of fact had an exact replica made for my Discovery).

I know that many readers of this blog are experienced airgunners or airgun hunters, but I also get a lot of mail from those new to the sport. A question I’m often asked is, what gun is better to get started in airgun hunting, a spring piston or a PCP? As we know the prospective airgun hunter has a couple options when considering an airgun; either a spring piston or a pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) power plant being the most widely used. Pre-charged pneumatics are filled from a high pressure air source, such as a SCUBA tank, and offer many advantages to the hunter. They are compact, accurate, powerful, recoilless, and effective with large caliber pellets. The disadvantages are that they are expensive, take additional filling gear, and are reliant on an external power source. The other power plant mentioned is the spring piston airgun; the advantages being that they are fully self-contained, can be quite powerful and accurate, and as a rule cost a lot less than PCPs. The disadvantages are that they tend to be larger and heavier (not always the case though), have more recoil so take a bit more practice to shoot well, and require more effort to cock as a strong spring must be compressed to ready the gun for shooting.

I’ve been using this one springer for about twenty years, and still bring it out on a couple hunts every year.

A compelling argument can be made for either of these power plants, and there are strong proponents for both. I think that it depends on your intended use, your specific hunting requirements, personal preferences, and how deep you want to dig into the piggy bank. I have both and use both for hunting a variety of quarry, but in this post we’ll take a look at the spring piston power plant. I find the idea of a fully self contained gun very appealing, and will often take a springer along when heading out fishing or camping, anywhere that I don’t want to carry along a lot of extra gear or can’t be reliant on an external source of power to keep the gun shooting. So let’s take a look at what these guns can do with respect to performance, and what type of hunting you can use them for.

Spring Piston Performance

The spring piston airgun generates power using a powerful spring-loaded piston that is housed within a compression chamber. Cocking the gun (using a break barrel, side lever, or under lever mechanism) causes the piston assembly to compress the spring. When the spring is released it pushes the piston forward compressing a column of air in the chamber behind the pellet. The spring piston power plant is capable of developing sufficient energy to get a projectile moving at supersonic velocities, though effectiveness as a hunting tool is not solely a function of muzzle velocity. Pellet design is somewhat different than that of a firearm bullet, and many do not perform well at supersonic velocities becoming unstable as they transition across the sound barrier, which can adversely impact accuracy. In addition, a major advantage of airguns is that they are quiet. But once the projectile goes supersonic an audible “crack” is generated, yet still with a lower sound signature than a .rimfire 22 short. If the projectile is kept subsonic, then any sound from the gun is primarily the mechanical noise generated by the piston slamming home. I don’t mean to imply that you disregard muzzle velocity, by all means look for a gun with a higher velocity. But then rather than trying to achieve the highest velocity possible with that gun, which is typically achieved using the lightest pellet available, try a heavier pellet.  A 14 grain pellet moving at 1000 fps yields more power that a 7 grain pellet moving at 1200 fps. The heavy pellet moving at subsonic velocities is generally quieter and more accurate, yielding better terminal performance on game.

Most airguns generate relatively low power compared to even a rimfire. This is not always the case; there are a couple pre-charged pneumatic airguns in my collection that are getting close to 600 fpe. However, most (not all) spring piston guns are limited to under 20 fpe. This is plenty of power for small game out to forty yards, and bigger stuff such as raccoon and woodchucks at 30 yards.

About 10 years ago I met airgun hunting pioneer Randy Mitchell down in Kentucky, and our first hunt together was squirrel with springers …… and the last time we hunted together was big bore pcps in Africa.

In the United Kingdom, where airgun hunting has a huge following, hunters are limited to 12 fpe guns without a special (and almost impossible to obtain) firearms certificate. They have taken untold numbers of rabbits, squirrels, pigeons, and crows with these guns over the years. The whole objective of airgun hunting is achieving optimal accuracy from both the gun and the hunter. This is the overriding criteria; once a gun is doing 14 fpe any small game animal it connects with is going down cleanly so long as the shot placement is correct. However, once pinpoint accuracy is achieved, more power never hurts, and it will permit the hunter to reach out a bit further! I’ve been using a Beeman C1 (built by Webley & Scott) for well over two decades, and this mid 800 fps carbine in .177 has put more game in the bag than just about any gun I’ve ever owned. If you’ll be going after larger quarry such as raccoon, a gun producing 20 fpe or more is a good idea.

Another consideration when choosing a hunting springer is the cocking effort. It only takes a single cocking motion to prepare the gun for shooting, but the effort can be substantial. As a rule of thumb, the more powerful the gun the more effort will go into cocking it.  That’s why my 30 fpe .25 caliber Webley Patriot is not the first choice when plinking. The 40 lb cocking effort is very manageable for a days hunting, but is less ideal if the intention is to shoot a couple tins of pellets during a range session! I think finding the right balance of accuracy, power, cocking effort, and field attributes (size, weight, fit) is key to selecting the right gun.

I started tuning my own springers and building up hunting guns out of cheap Chinese knock offs… A great learning experience if you want to experiment, but overall I’d say buy the best gun you can afford. I have some of my old premium guns in the collection, but all the less expensive guns have been given away, traded, or sold over the years.

What Caliber Is Best?

There are four standard airgun calibers; the.177, .20, .22, and .25, with the .177 and .22 by far the most common. An old adage I’ve heard repeated by many British airgunners is; .177 for feathers and .22 for fur. I don’t think it is quite so simple, and believe that the best caliber depends on what projectile will be used, what ranges will be encountered, how large the quarry is, and the hunters ability to deliver precise shot placement with a particular gun. When comparing the .177 and .22 for instance, both can be effective; the point is that due to the lower velocities achieved with the .22 (in the same model gun) the trajectory will be more arced while the .177 will shoot flatter and require less holdover. On the other hand, shooters that don’t have a problem judging holdover will be able to deliver higher impact energy on target with the .22 caliber.

Pre-charged pneumatics airguns work more efficiently with larger caliber pellets, so I’ll usually opt for a .22 or larger. With springers on the other hand, I don’t have a strong preference and use the .177 on most small game without reservation. The .20 caliber is a good trade off between the advantages and limitations of the two more common calibers, but both guns and ammo are a bit limited in availability and selection, yet still worth consideration. The .25 is the big kahuna when it comes to spring piston air rifles, and can generate upwards of 30 fpe. There are only a handful of guns that are chambered for the largest conventional caliber, but it is a very effective for medium sized game.

An in-depth discussion on projectile styles is out of the scope of this article, but I will say that a wide selection is available. There is a pellet style and specification for virtually any hunting application; wadcutters and hollowpoints that limit penetration, roundnose and hunting points that increase it, and specialty polymer tipped pellets that optimize the tradeoff between penetration and expansion. There are light alloy pellets that allow lower power guns to increase velocity, and heavier pellets that allow more powerful guns to deliver greater energy at longer distances. The typical cost for a tin of high quality .177 roundnose pellets is around $6.00 for 500 pellets; though you can spend half that or twice as much depending on what you want, inexpensive any way you look at it.

Increased Hunting Opportunity

There are many options available when it comes to the selection of a spring piston air rifle for hunting. The one that is best suited for you depends on what you want to hunt, where you will hunt, what ranges you’ll shoot at, and of course, which rifle appeals to your sense of aesthetics. Many of the newer spring piston airgun designs are capable of supersonic velocities. But as discussed, there is more to it than simply getting the highest muzzle velocity; it’s picking a gun that yields adequate power and exceptional accuracy. When you hit a small game animal with a head shot at 35 yards, it doesn’t really matter if the muzzle velocity was 900 fps or 1130 fps. It’s all about shot placement! When making your rifle and pellet selection, keep in mind that once the pellet goes supersonic there may be some degradation in accuracy depending on pellet design, and it will be louder. With the right gun and pellet combination, a spring piston airgun provides more than enough power to cleanly and efficiently kill just about any small game or pest species found in North America. And because they are quiet and have limited range, they are practical for use in more built up areas. This can result in more hunting opportunities closer to home, and opens up otherwise inaccessible areas where even a rimfire is too loud and carries too far be practical.

Other Stuff

Booked my flights out to Arizona for the end of the week and can’t wait to hit the extreme Benchrest again this year …… loads of fun; great shooting events, great people….. if you can make it, it’s well worth the drive! I’m bringing the FX Boss, lots of pellets, and bench rest gear this year….. probably won’t make a huge difference, but after using a borrowed  gun last year I promised myself I’d bring my own equipment…. but there are some outstanding marksman coming! Squirrel Hunting Specialist

The Brocock Specialist is the most compact hunting rifle in my collection, though there is nothing diminutive about the performance.

A few months back I ordered a Brocock Specialist in .22 caliber, after having the chance to do a jackrabbit and prairie dog shoot with it up in Northern Arizona. We had several guns along with us, including some very expensive high end masterpieces along on the trip, but I kept finding myself with this little carbine in hand. The guys I was hunting with were laughing, because they knew as soon as this gun came out of the case I was going to be on it like bees on honey. I found that this gun was generating 20 or so full power shots in the 20 fpe range, and that the gun digested a variety of pellets. The reason I wanted the gun was first, to keep in the my Outback’s trunk with a buddy bottle so I always had a gun at hand, and secondly to use as a compact little gun for pick up squirrel hunts when I found a little time and a stand of trees.

I prefer shooting off sticks when possible, but shooting offhand or braced against trees is sometimes the only option.

I’d been driving by a plot of land with a nice stand of hardwoods that is being cut down and bull dozed to make room for a new housing development…… you hate to see it happen, but I live in such a place so won’t be a hypocrite and complain about it. They cut down about 70% of the woods and have put in roads, but then nothing happened afterwards, it just sat there. One day driving by I saw a guy in a truck looking at a set of plans spread out on the hood of his truck, and pulled in behind to talk to him. He turned out to be the project manager and we talked for awhile, with me making sure to mention I’d bought a house in the development they’d just finished, before asking if it would be alright to do some squirrel hunting with my airgun before they finished knocking down what was left of the woods. He said he didn’t care especially since I was “only shooting an airgun” though he couldn’t officially give me permission. He went on to say that once the crew came in to start working in a couple months, it was off limits to shooting, airguns or not, which was fine by me.

I’ve been busy and traveling quite a bit lately, plus had several other guns to work up. But this morning after church and taking the family out for a great Chinese lunch, I decided to go on a short hunt along a hundred yard stretch of woods bordering a small lake. I drove in with my messenger bag, a shooting stick, and a cushion (the ground was wet and it’s getting cold), parked and headed off. Not more than 50 yards in a caught the flicker of a bushytail a couple of trees away, and brought the gun up and leaned in on a sapling to brace myself. Looking through the scope I could see a bit of tail behind a branch, and waited. It wasn’t long before the squirrel jumped out on to a large horizontal branch and sat like a target……but as I looked saw it was one of the little red squirrels, which I typically don’t shoot when out in the woods. They’re too small for the table and aren’t doing any harm out here so I take a live and let live approach.

I slowly crept down a deer trail and saw a grey squirrel threading it’s way through the canopy. It was moving away from my disturbance, but stopped every now and again. I took an offhand shot at forty yards, missing cleanly, the squirrel turned and started running back and forth trying to decide which way to go. He stopped, but just as I squeezed off the shot, jumped with my pellet hitting pretty much right where he’d been a split second before. That was all she wrote, that bushytail was gone in a flash without a backwards glance. A little further along, I came up to what looked like a perfect den tree; it was a big damages trunk with holes and perching branches stretching up 50 feet in the air, with a big oak and several small hickory’s surrounding it. Even though I didn’t see anything moving, I sat myself down on my foam pad and rested the Specialist on a monopod and enjoyed the scenery, woodpeckers, finches, and the occasional flight of geese heading south. I turned from my bird watching to see that a gray squirrel had moved on to a branch up in the den tree, and was sitting perfectly broadside at 50 yards. I had the Hawke 3-9x variable scope set at 7x and the gun loaded with RWS Superdome pellets (thought I’d give this old standard a go). Lining up just a bit over the head, I watched the pellet hit home knocking the squirrel out of the tree DOA by the time he hit the ground.

At the end of the hunt, I’d put two in the bag, missed two, and passed on a few red squirrels……. not bad for a two hour hunt less than 5 minutes from home!

I stayed out for another hour, missing the next squirrel and hitting the one after, before taking off on the 5 minute drive home to write this up and prepare for a flight down south in the morning. I really like this gun, and as I was sitting in the woods came up with a third scenario for it in my hunting repertoire; Taking off the moderator, demounting the action from the stock, this gun slips into a takedown shot gun case and along with a handpump will make a great little travel gun as well! If you have a need/desire for a compact, lightweight, full power hunting carbine, I can definitely recommend you take a look at the Brocock.

Just a quick note: I had one of the AOA pellet canisters and find these a very convenient means of carrying pellets in the field. It keeps them well protected and easily accessible when needed.

Crow Hunting

I was thinking about my hunting plans, and what I have to look forward to as the seasons kick in. So far this year I’ve been out several times for rabbits, squirrels, pest birds (pigeons, Eurasian doves and starlings), coyote, and all kinds of game over in SA. I’ll be hitting the small game all over the country between now and feb/march (when it starts shut down). On the books I’ve got a whitetail/hog/squirrel hunt down in Alabama, a blackbuck/hog/predator hunt in West Texas, more deer in Missouri, and finally ……. Javalina in Arizona! Worth noting is that this is the first year that airguns for deer will be legal in Alabama, and most big game will be allowed to be taken with airguns in Arizona! I’ve wanted a legal javalina with an air rifle for many, many years…. and finally I’ll get the chance!

Not bad for a couple hours before work. I’m often asked how, with a busy professional life, I get to hunt as much as I do. The trick is to take every opportunity; a couple of hours before or after work or squeezed around family activities on the weekends, in addition to those less frequent long weekend or major trips built from saved vacation days can give you loads of hunting time….. at least if you have an understanding wife!

Besides these hunts I’ll be going after crows throughout the winter. This is a great airgunning challenge, crows are very receptive to calls and will come in from far and wide to a mob call, but getting them to land takes some finesse. I was thinking back to a morning on a winter past when I headed out for a couple of hours of crow hunting carrying the FX Monsoon semiautomatic .22 caliber precharged pneumatic air rifle, a tin of JSB Exacts, and my FOXPRO Wildfire electronic call. I got to my site at 6:30 to the sound of a few distant crows cawing and the sun starting up. I parked and hiked across a cut corn field and into a stand of trees separating this plot of land from another field. I set the call at the border of the field and tucked myself in to the base of bramble twenty yards down and ten feet into the trees and cranked up the call.

I started with a crow fight sound, and within a few minutes a murder of crows soaring over head. With my shotgun I’d have been dropping them all around, but armed with my air rifle I sat and waited for one to land. As I waited, I looked overhead and saw a crow perched straight overhead. Branches were in the way of his body, but he had his head stuck out in the clear looking into the field. I lined up the crosshairs and squeezed the off the shot, and at the muffled discharge (this gun is very quiet) the crow folded, bouncing through the branches and almost falling on my head. The stock on this rifle is very ergonomic, and I find it is comfortable to shoot offhand from just about any position.

I muted the call and spiked the crow in the field to use as a decoy, then sat back and started the fight call again. And again, the crows started circling overhead, but would not land. I let the fight call die down, then switched to a dying crow sound at a lower volume, at which another crow glided in and landed in the tree right next to me. Again shooting almost straight up I pulled the trigger and a second crow dropped.

Gathering up my gear and collecting the birds, I hiked about a mile down the dirt road until I reached a stand of woods of about ten acres, and worked my way through the thorny vines well into cover. Starting up the fight sound for a couple minutes until hearing a response, I then changed up to an injured crow call. Crows started flying in and three approached looking like they would land, but veered off at the last minute. Then one landed and I shot, but this crow spun on the branch hanging upside down while weakly flapping his wings. A second bird landed and started pecking at its dying comrade, where a quick follow up anchored him.

I waited a little longer but no more birds landed, so I packed up and hiked back to the car for the drive home. I got to the house, unloaded my gear, took a quick shower, and was in my office by 9:00 for a day of work. A great thing about airguns is that because they are quiet and have limited range, they let you hunt closer to home. The calls I used in my FOXPRO worked well, but I am going to extend the call dictionary for more crow sounds, getting the birds to land takes a lot more finesse than shotgunning. The Monsoon is a superb hunting gun that I really enjoy hunting with; it is powerful, accurate, quiet, and fires in semi auto for those fast follow up shots. The last crow I shot would not have been possible without the fast follow up this gun offered. Tomorrow is Saturday and belongs to my family….. but I think I’ll get up while they’re having a sleep in. I can get out for a quick repeat, and be home with my hunting fix taken care of before anybody else crawls out of bed!

So besides the small game, predators, deer, hogs, javalina, and exotics, my future holds a lot of field time sorting out the crows. Seasons are long, bag limits high, challenges great, and fun is off the chart. To be effective I highly recommend an electronic call, and my experience hunting in the snow with snow camo is the most productive approach. Crows are tough and while a moderate power .22 is good, a higher power .25 better, I expect the .303 will shine in this application…. I’ll report on the results as I gain experience.

Other Stuff

I’m registered for SHOT Show in January, which is always a high point in the winter for me. I get the chance to see what’s new, line up my airgunning projects for the new year, and run around with nothing on my mind but airguns for a few days! It’s also a chance to meet up with my editors, and some of the media types I’ve gotten to know over the years, and lots of my friends from hunts, shoots, and other capers over the years.

Also getting ready for the Extreme Bench Rest competition down in Tucson, it is going to be big time fun this year. I suspect there will be some guys with bullpups that have something to show, and after last years showing, probably lots of guys with .303’s! If your thinking about attending to either watch or compete, I’d say get off the fence and sign up! This is one of the most fun events to be found in the airgunning world where your a master or a plinker.
